Boules or "Pétanque"

The origins of the boules game date back to ancient times, when the Greeks played using coins! This sport then developed in Provence in the 19th century, when it was referred to as "La Longue", in which players had to run up to throw their ball.
In 1910, a keen player from La Ciotat found himself unable to play due to his arthritis. The owner of the boules ground – a man with one leg – suggested they should play with their feet immobile or "pieds tanqués" in Provençal dialect: And that is how today's game of Pétanque was born!
