A day in Les Baux

The astonishing medieval and Renaissance village of Les Baux-de-Provence offers a unique insight into the history of Provence against the stunning backdrop of the Alpilles mountain range.
The village: teetering on a rocky spur and resembling a vast wrecked ship, Les Baux is a feast for the eyes and the mind.

Château des Baux

Les Baux de Provence

Château des Baux

This castle lived a glorious heyday before sinking into oblivion and finally being revived to become one of the Bouches-du-Rhône's most-visited monuments after Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde basilica. Poised on a rocky spur, the Château des Baux stands proudly over a valley of the same name in the Alpilles mountain range. Its ruins harbour 11 centuries of history.
Since 1993, the castle – which unusually was dug directly into the rock face – can be visited all year round. The 1 ½ hour guided tour offers a fascinating insight into castle life in medieval times, and covers themes such as social hierarchy, weapons, defence structures, and the "courts of love", where minstrels and troubadours came to boast their talent!
