"Before heading up to the beautiful site of Les Baux, between Arles and Saint-Rémy, take time out to visit the herb-scented country of the Alpilles hills, abounding with olive groves and vineyards.
Les Baux is a chaos of rocks harbouring an ancient stone-built town. Its fortress was built in the 12th century by the Baux family - who claimed they were descendants of King Baltazar - then destroyed twice by the kings of France, who envied its immense strength. The kids will love having a go on the giant catapult and indulging in medieval games. Take time out to admire the beautiful 16th-century Renaissance mansion houses on your return to the village.
