A weekend break in Marseille
To spend a weekend in Marseille, start by choosing a small hotel a mere stone’s throw from the Old Harbour so that you can make the best of all that’s on offer.
On the programme for your weekend:
- a trip round the Old Harbour in a traditional boat (a “pointu”): see Marseille’s historic monuments from the sea (the forts, City Hall, St. Victor’s Abbey etc.) and enjoy the skipper’s racy commentary.
- visit Marseille’s local history museum (Musée d’histoire de Marseille) and the “garden of ruins” (Jardin des vestiges) to learn about the fascinating history of France’s oldest city (founded in 600 B.C.) and see reminders of occupation by the Ancient Greeks and Romans.
- Go shopping in Rue de la Tour or Cours Julien (designer luxury), Rue Saint Ferréol or Rue de la République (you can find anything and everything here) and Rue Paradis (leading brand names and luxury goods). Then, if you’re really mad about clothes, visit the Fashion Museum (Musée de la Mode) on the Canebière!
- Take a stroll round Le Panier, the picturesque district that is the oldest in Marseille.
- Climb up to Notre-Dame de la Garde, the “Good Mother” who keeps watch over the city. There’s a fabulous view of the harbour from up here.
